What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry, that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental issues. It also focuses on the application of braces and aligners, the correction of misaligned teeth, and overall facial aesthetics.
Why is Orthodontic Treatment Important?
Improved Oral Health: Misaligned, crowded and/or crooked teeth can lead to various dental issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, and difficulty in proper oral hygiene maintenance.
Enhanced Aesthetics: Some individuals feel that a straighter smile provides them with more confidence. It also is felt to have a positive impact on ones self-image.
Functional Benefits: Some people find having misaligned teeth can cause problems with chewing and speaking. Correcting bite issues, will lead to improved function and comfort.
Long-Term Cost Savings: If you are able to address orthodontic issues early you will save on time and money if severe dental problems were to occur.
Common Orthodontic Treatments
1. Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth and connected by wires. Over time, your orthodontist will adjust these wires causing your teeth to gradually move to their desired positions.
2. Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces. Here we use clear brackets, making them less visable.
3. Lingual Braces
Lingual braces attach to the back of the teeth, making them invisible from the front. People find this option is more challenging to clean and it takes longer to adjust to.
4. Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are removable plastic trays that gradually shift teeth into alignment without the need for brackets or wires.
5. Retainers
Retainers help prevent relapse. There are a few different types of retainers. The main goal is to ensure that your smile stays straight over time.
Conclusion
Overall good orthodontic care will ultimately contribute to better oral health, a balanced smile, and enhanced confidence. With a variety of options availbe, now is the time to embrace a new you.
